Using “Find from Sender”

It’s easy to let emails pile up, especially because you only have a certain amount of control over the messages you receive. Spam filters will block junk messages from getting through, but there are other tools to help you deal with the “legitimate” messages that don’t serve any value for you.

Use the “Find from Sender” feature to help identify any automated messages that you tend to ignore or immediately delete. The feature is available in most common email clients. It will filter all messages that were sent from the same email address. Right click a promotional or newsletter message in your email client and select the option that best matches “Find all from Sender”. This will give you a realistic view of how often you open emails from the sender.

In the example below I selected “Find emails from New York Times” in my personal Gmail inbox.

As a NYT subscriber I occasionally read articles recommended to me via Google Newsfeed or other sites, but I also received 16 email digests from them in the last month. I decided to unsubscribe from email digests based on the fact I only clicked on one of the messages. I opened one of the emails and selected “manage email preferences” in the small footer at the bottom of the email. That brought me to my NYT account page where I could unsubscribe from The Morning newsletter.

Emails and Settings page on the New York Times website, which shows my subscription to The Morning newsletter and an option to remove it from my account.

“Find from Sender” is a fast and simple feature than can quickly give you data about how much you read emails from certain senders. The visual indicator will motivate you to unsubscribe from emails that don’t add value to your life, even if the service adds value to you through other communications!
